Power-Ups and Vintage Charm: Mario-Inspired 1950s Cosplay

Sometimes the simplest ideas turn out to be the most charming — and our Super Mario Power-Up mashup at FanExpo2024 was a perfect example!

For this mini group cosplay, we took inspiration from classic Mario power-ups — think mushrooms, stars, and more — and gave them a fun retro twist. Each of us styled the same flattering A-line dress in different colours and accessories to represent a specific item. The result? A vibrant, playful group look that turned heads and brought big smiles all around.

This theme was especially exciting because it was super accessible. We all ordered the same dress online and made small, creative modifications to reflect our chosen power-up. With a few patches, belts, and accessories, we managed to pull off something matchy, recognizable, and totally adorable — without spending a fortune or needing weeks of prep.

A highlight of the day was wearing our dresses to attend a panel featuring none other than Charles Martinet, the iconic voice of Mario himself! It felt like the perfect way to pay tribute — lighthearted, creative, and full of the joy that the Mario games have brought to so many.
